What this episode is about
Marketing departments are getting smaller — but what happens when you don't just lead the team, you are the team? Amy Hopkins lived exactly that as Head of Marketing for Africa Padel, running the whole function on her own (she has since moved into a new role). In this conversation we dig into how she used AI tools strategically to clear the busywork, and why she kept her real attention on building deeper relationships both inside and outside the business. It's an honest look at how to make an outsized impact when you're a department of one — and a few perspective shifts that stuck with us long after recording.
Three things we took away
- Out-prioritise, don't out-produce. A solo marketer can't win on volume — the edge is choosing where your attention goes, and protecting it.
- Let AI clear the busywork. Used well, AI handles the time-consuming tasks so a one-person team can spend its hours on judgement and relationships — the things that can't be automated.
- Relationships are the multiplier. The trust Amy built across the business did work she'd otherwise have had to do alone. For a lean marketer, internal relationships are leverage you don't have to hire.
